## Session 1.4 - Same Parts, Different Wholes

## Learning Goals -

1. I can find fractional parts of a rectangular area.

2. I can find fractional parts of a group (of objects, people, etc.)

3. I can compare the same fractional parts of different-sized wholes.

3. I can compare the same fractional parts of different-sized wholes.

## Halves of Different Wholes

We have been finding fractional parts of a 4 X 6 rectangle.

Now we are going to work with a different rectangle. (5x12)

What are the dimensions of this rectangle?

Will 1/2 of the area of this rectangle be the same size as 1/2 of the area of the 4 X 6 rectangle?

Discuss with your neighbor.

What do you notice when you find 1/2 or 1/4 of the 5 X 12 rectangle?

What is the same and what is different from finding 1/2 or 1/4 of the 4 X 6 rectangle?

Discuss with your neighbor.

Is 2/3 of the area of the 5 x 12 rectangle more than 2/3 of the area of the 4 X 6 rectangle? How do you know?
